The blanket of snow is a welcome addition to the garden. The perennials, lawns, trees
and shrubs need the snow for protection and when it melts will provide much needed moisture. The snow will act as an insulator from the cold and the thicker the snow
blanket the warmer the soil will be. According to some the temperature below the snow
increases by 1-2 deg C for each inch of accumulation. (1" = 2.5cm)
Some evergreens can suffer from too much snow load. Make sure that heavy snow is gently removed as this can bend or even break branches especially multi-stemmed shrubs. Ice should be left alone, you will
likely break the stems. If you have multi stemmed shrubs (ie columnar cedars, etc) you should bind with a wrap or twine to hold branches together before winter.
