I remember my great grandparents having a corner of their basement sectioned off as a cold cellar. At the time I only new that great grandma would go down their and come back up with potatoes, carrots and a few other veggies. Now I know that it was a place to store these vegetables to get them through the winter months. Great grandpa would grow rows of vegetables in the backyard all summer and this was the bounty they enjoyed over winter.
Now we are all coming to realize the benefits of having grown our own vegetables or at least growing some of them and a surge is accumulating among the masses to grow and provide for ourselves. A kind of getting back to basics. I'm sure the recession has a part to play as well with many noticing the increase in our grocery bills.
While perusing the many sites on the web I came across several showing you step by step instructions on how to make your own root cellar, some in the fashion of the PTG using discarded objects and giving them a new function. Using discarded freezers
for instance. Remove all the coils and bits, freon, and whatever else leaving just the shell of the appliance, dig a hole in the ground to accommodate the appliance and bury it in the ground. This will house your vegetables over the winter. Others have also taken sand placing them in boxes and putting this in the back of your unheated garage. This will store a few vegetables over the winter.
Read up on these methods before you try them.
