Aquaponics is the growing of plants and fish in the same tank under natural or supplementary lighting. It works by food being supplied to the fish, fish waste then feeds the plants, and lighting provides energy for the plants to grow. You could grow anything from tomatoes, basil, etc along with fish. Double the crop 1/2 the space. The technology is being developed in Canada at the Crop Diversification Centre in Brooks, Alta. At the University of Alberta they are currently housing an aquaponics unit. Over 60 food crops were tested in the greenhouse. 24 chosen for trials, 5 greenhouse vegetables and 19 herbs.It is potentially a new way for a more profital use of greenhouse growing in cold climates. There are still many studies to be conducted and tests to perform. Some are concerned about the transfer of parasites and other problems that can be passed to humans.
To me it sounds like we are trying to duplicate what mother nature already does with our waterways. (Just a thought!!!)
