Starting today, Peel residents can place their yard waste at the curb for pick-up.
The Region of Peel will begin collecting leaves, trimmings, plants, twigs, grass clippings and other yard waste— weekly during April, May, June, October and November, during the summer (July, August, and September) yard waste will be collected every other week.
Residents can find details of the summer yard waste collection schedule in the 2010/2011 Waste Management Guide, which is currently being mailed to homes.
For yard waste, regional officials are asking residents to:
• place yard waste in labelled, open, rigid and reusable containers; bushel baskets; or paper yard waste bags;
• set out yard waste and recyclable material on the opposite side of the driveway from garbage, if possible;
• tie sticks securely in bundles up to 1.2 m (4 feet) in length and 76 cm (30 inches) in width, weighing no more than 20 kg (44 pounds);
• pumpkins, leaves, garden trimmings, plants, grass clippings, twigs, branches and lawn edgings (earth removed) can be set out as yard waste. Pumpkins can also be placed in backyard composters or cut into pieces and placed in the green bin for organics recycling;
• corn stalks and remaining fruits and vegetables from the garden should be placed in backyard composters or set out as yard waste;
• shredded paper should be placed loose in yard waste containers or green bins;
• do not use plastic bags, cardboard boxes, green bins or blue boxes for yard waste;
Stumps, soil, sod and stones should not be placed in yard waste, this can be taken to any of Peel’s Community Recycling Centres (CRC) for disposal— drop-off fees apply.

Sometimes with all the confusion about recycling we are very unsure of what goes where. If you go to http://www.peelregion.ca/pw/waste/ you will be able to enter any item you want to throw out and it will tell you whether to trash it or recycle it.
