I worked in Block A from 11am to 2pm weeding rows 3,4 and the start of 5. As I have said a few times the weeds will take over if we don't keep ahead of them. Block A is a perfect example of no human intervention.


With the exception of a few volunteers clearing rows 3 and 4 early in the season to plant chard, beets and a few other crops the entire block has not been touched this year.

One of our students wanted to know how to get rid of clover(Trifoleum), and seemed taken aback at the advise to get rid of the lawn and keep the trifoleum. After several trys at hand removal with no success the only other way would be to dig it up making sure you get the runners and replacing the sod.

Trifolium has the ability to fix nitrogen and will enrich your soil and can reduce or eliminate the need for fertilizers. Bees, and other pollinators love it. You don't have to mow it and it will always be green even when your neighbours grass has gone dormant.

Caught a warning in the paper about Giant Hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum) being located in three of Brampton's parks.

If you find this weed which is similar in looks to cow parsnip DO NOT touch it without preparing yourself first. This is a perennial herb from the Parsley family with stout taproot of fleshy, fibrous roots - hollow green stem with purple spots that grows up to 15ft tall; dark green, coarsely toothes leaves divided into 3 large segments; lower leaves can exceed 7 1/2 ft in length; small white blooms in large flat umbrella like clusters up to 2ft across and can produce 50,000 seeds per plant. Originated from Caucasus region of Asia

Warning: small hairs on stems and leaves contain a poisonous sap that can cause severe irritation, blistering and dermatitis

To remove one of these plants :
wear protective clothing, including gloves, long sleeves, pants, and eye protection;
immediately remove any flower heads to prevent seed growth and dispersal;
sever the plant roots 8 – 12 cm below the soil surface;
dispose of all plant parts in double-bagged garbage bags, and DO NOT COMPOST;
return to plant site periodically to remove any new plant growth.
