We will be creating a Canadian Hybridized peony bed in front of the main building. Alan had mentioned that these were unavailable in nurseries. I have found several that can be purchased. Was up at 9am weeding and laying mulch in a couple of paths in Block B. Weeded a bit in block A, but, this block is going to take a dedicated team to get a good grip on the weeding. Left at 12:50pm.I managed to make some time and log the peony seedlings and check on the roots. Out of approx. 100 seeds planted in 2006 we have 55 seedlings that germinated and have been successfully growing over the past 2 or 3 years. We have also been given root donations in the last two years and I have brought several to add to our collection (14).
In 2007 a couple of roots were planted for the "Growing on Program" implemented by the Canadian Peony Society. We will grow the roots for 3 to 5 years at which time the roots will be dug up and added to the CPS Root Sale fundraiser held once a year for members, as compensation for donating our time we keep a piece of the root.

Had three peony root donations and took them up to be planted in the peony beds. 2 are unknown and one is anemoniflora rosea. It should make quite an addition to the seedlings.
Alan was up weeding with the grass whipper and picking potato beetles.
If you see any wooden frost fence out there grab it we could use it for the tomatoes.

Hybridizing peonies can be alot of fun. At PTG we have opted to open pollinate. (This means we know one parent but not the other) If you wish to try your hand at hybridizing here is how its done.
Choose your parent plants. This is as simple as, I like this one and this one, then its time to get to work!!
Once you have chosen the mother watch the bud as soon as it starts to show colour remove petals and stamens.
The next step is to collect the pollen from the father as soon as it begins to
bloom.
Cover the carpels and stigma all over with the pollen.
When you have completed this make sure you cover the cross with a paper bag.
This will keep the selection clean. After a few weeks the bag can be removed. (Or left it can be left on. Many breeders have too many bags to remove and choose not to)
Make sure you keep track of your crosses for future reference. In September, collect the seeds when pods mature. Mix 1ml bleach to 100ml water and rinse seeds, then rinse in fresh water. These seeds may be planted directly to the garden (field). Make a note to where these seeds are it can take a couple of years to show growth. Make sure you mark the crosses so you know when they bloom where they came from. You may have the next exciting hit on the market!!! Good luck and have fun.

I have sent out reminders to our students/volunteers telling them that the next class is this Saturday. It will be the last indoor class and we are also hoping that the students will have their course critiques ready to be handed in.
One of the students asked about tree peonies. They have a family member who had no blooms on the tree peony for 3 years and wants to know if they are doing something wrong?
Because I don't know the conditions with which your sisters tree peony is growing in I will give you the care and maintenance of a tree peony. Hopefully her problem will be found below and it can be corrected.
GROWING TREE PEONIES
Tree peonies need friable soil (loose and crumbly) and well-tilled, with supplemental organic matter or humus. When your soil contains adequate organic matter, the plant will not need fertilizing. Mulching is a good idea. Tree peonies can grow from 3' to 5' high and equally wide in about 10 years; and occasionally larger under ideal growing conditions. Prune in late winter to keep smaller or to eliminate dead wood.
Plant in a sunny to partially shady, well-drained location. Dig a hole large enough to accommodate the root system, 2' wide x 2' deep is adequate. Plant your tree peony so that the top of the soil ball is at ground level. The graft of the woody stem (scion) and the root (understock) is very sensitive. The graft should be planted well below soil line this will help the tree to develop its own root system no longer depending on the rootstock to which it has been grafted.
Protect tree peonies from heavy winds. In colder climates, tree peonies should be given about 4" to 5" of mulch in winter. Never allow mulch to touch trunk.
Tree peonies bloom in the spring, before herbaceous peonies. Exact time depends on your plant zone (for us usually May). They require between 500 and 1000 winter chilling hours (between 32°-40°F) to flower successfully. Patience is required to grow these plants. Sometimes they do not bloom the second or third year after being grafted.

One of my passions is peonies. I have taken on the wondrous task of growing peonies from seed. Growing from seed gives you the joy of producing a bloom that has never been seen before. At the least you can grow your own stock. It is best to note that from seed to flower can take approximately 7 years. (This can explain why some cost so much) It is also prudent to point out that growing from seed means the seed plant is not true to the parent.
At Peel Teaching Garden we have several beds dedicated to this task and for the last two years I have been planting out seed and/or seedlings in the hopes of increasing stock. We had a slight mishap with some weed spray last year that killed off some of the young seedlings, but, this should not be a future problem.
When you get your seed, sterilize them by placing seed in a cup of water mixed with one teaspoon of bleach. Keep in this mixture for approximately one minute, remove and rinse in clean water. Prepare your bags with vermiculite and place your seed in the bag,label bags with name, how many seeds, and the year.
After you have your seeds prepared place in a warm place for a couple of months. Peony seeds have two stages in order to germinate. The first is a warm period to work on root developemnt. The second is cool period for roots to progress.
The size of root is perfect for potting up and putting seed in the garden (if proper planting time - October) Check your bags often for rotting (too much moisture) and progression of root developement.
Planting in 4 pack for winter storage
Take a 4 pack with a medium of sandy soil mixed with perlite and place root into pot with seed at soil level. Lightly water and place under lights. In spring (May) plant out into the garden.

Planted 21 peony seedlings in a 4 x 30ft bed and covered with straw. We have two more beds designated for seeds next month.
Alan and Moeen showed up around 9:00 and started work on getting more of the tomatoes in. We have 10 rows of 10 of tomatoes (different types) and several rows of other veggies growing. I put stakes in several rows and Moeen planted the tomatoes. Libardo came by and Alan went with him on a scavenger hunt. Found some farm fencing and put it to good use creating a leanto for the beans. All the beds are now created in Block C and everything is looking quite respectable. I watered in all the veggies including the ones in raised beds and the newly planted peonies.

I contacted the Canadian Peony Society on behalf of the PTG and see if they would be willing to donate some roots for growing on to the PTG. They will supply roots and we will grow them for 4 or 5 years. After said time we will dig up for CPS root sale and be allowed to keep a piece for the PTG. Win/win.
This year I am also growing peonies from seed. As soon as the ground is workable we will set aside 3 beds to planted out to seed. Maybe we will be lucky and have a viable, desireable new bloom. I can't wait to get the beds started.
