Vines can be an essential part to any garden. They can be grown on structures to hide or soften them; placed upon a fence or trellis to form a screen; or incorporated as an accent, grown as a groundcover. Vines rambling over a stone wall or on a garden gate can be a thing of beauty. Here are a few to get the imagination stirring.

BITTERSWEET - Celastrus scandens Zone 3
One of the most ornamental vines. This vigorous, native vine has attractive yellow seed capsules opening to orange-red fruit that persists into winter. One must have both male and female plants for fruit set. Twining. Mature vines require little pruning other than removal of dead or excess growth.Grows in most soils. Grow in full sun to part shade. Fast grower easily growing 20ft in one season. Vines are great for structures or left to ramble along the ground. Birds enjoy the berries.




TRUMPET VINE - Campsis radicans Zone 5-9
Orange to salmon flowers throughout most of the summer months. A good, rapid growing,climbing vine for a tree or shade structure. Full sun to light shade in loamy, sandy or clay medium to well drained soil. Will tolerate some drought, wetness and salt. Attracts butterflies. Growth and flowering is best in full sun.





VARIEGATED PORCELAIN VINE - Ampelopsis brevipedunculata 'Elegans' Zone 4-8
A vigorous woody, tendril-climbing vine growing habit similar to wild grape and can grow 15 - 25ft. An interesting variety, with showy yellow, lilac, bright blue fruit in late autumn, (fruiting best in full sun) handsome dark green leaves variegated with white. Can be invasive in warm climates. Grows in any well drained soil. Twining. Full sun to part shade.
