Weedless Gardening by Lee Reich
A no nonsense approach to gardening taken from an eclectic group of sources.Lee Reich has taken past experience, following nature, and the advice of many that gardened before him and decided to garden without the work. The benefit to weedless gardening, fewer weeds and less time fighting them. A low impact way to planting and maintaining any garden, vegetable or flower, naturally.

Class #6 Landscaping
This class is always exciting. We talked about the purpose of a garden, stimulating the senses, stimulating the mind, focal points, balance, views and a place to sit.
Considerations in the landscape and knowing your lot size. Does your garden face East, South, North or West??
Drainage and flowerbed shapes are always hot topics. Do I make raised beds with boxed edges or just add a bit of sand and compost to an area and consider it done?
You should always have a garden line (two spikes with string tied to each) used to make a straight line, a good garden hose for nice sweeping curves, pegs for stakes, and a can of spray paint to mark the lines for your garden beds. (the ones the utility guy uses)
Making a circle, ellipse or triangle garden, how to calculate the annuals to fill that space. And did you know that if you take the measurement of your hand span you could use this as a ruler or reference point. You would never leave your hand behind so your measurement would always be there.

Horticulture Gardener's Desk Reference. This book is no longer in print but if you see it around it is definately a good one for the library.

Next class is April 11th.
Due to the Easter Long Weekend this class has been changed to SUNDAY April 5th.

In Defense of Food - an Eater's Manifesto by Michael Pollan

The cover says it all,"Eat Food, not too much, mostly plants."
Most of what we consume is not food, and how we consume it is not really eating. We consume "edible foodlike substances" products of science not nature in places like our cars or in front of the tv. If great grandma wouldn't recognize it as food it probably isn't.

Day -10 cloudy snow 14cm Wind NE17km/h P.O.P.63%

The Omnivore's Dilemma - a Natural History of Four Meals by Micheal Pollan

om-ni-vore (n)
1. an animal that will feed on any kindor many different kinds of food, including both plants and animals
2. somebody who has very wide interests and will read, study, or generally absorb anything that is available

The simple question that we ask ourselves everyday "What should we have for dinner?" takes an interesting twist for us omnivore's. We have so many choices (and so many fads) how do we chose the right foods?? Should we eat fast food? Something organic? Or something we hunt, gather or grow ourselves?

Read this book and discover things you never new. From the cornfields to food science labs, from feedlots and fast food restaurants to organic farms and hunting grounds. This book will bring to light the authors opinions from profound political, economic, psychological, and moral implications for all of us. This book is about visionary solutions, about problems and when it comes to food, doing the right thing often turns out to be the tastiest thing an eater can do.
