What will you grow in your garden this year??
Do you grow veggies, herbs, perennials, annuals? Are they in pots or in the ground? Do you have a combination? What are you most excited about trying this year?
I have been inspired by some to try veggies in planters, herbs in containers and combinations of herbs and veggies with perennials. This year I have already planted peas and beets in the home garden, I have designed a couple of planters using coleus, pelargoniums, lettuce, pansies, carrots, thyme, mint, and sage. During the spring wake up I will design a few more with the many houseplants and seedlings I have been overwintering in the house.

Companion Planting
When preparing your beds companion plants can play a vital role in an "organic" garden. At PTG this is not a common practice, but, if you were to do this in your own garden they will draw in beneficial insects and surprisingly if planned out can inject colour too.
Here is a small list of some companion plants:
Basil with tomatoes is said to improve growth and flavour.
Borage is a bee magnet, and planted with tomatoes and squash deters tomato worm.
Chamomile referred to as 'the plants physician' because it protects against various pests and diseases.
Chives with beetroot, tomatoes and carrot deter aphids and improve growth and flavour.
Clover has been a mainstay crop as green manure and it attracts many of the beneficial insects.
Coriander with potatoes can deter aphids and attract bees.
French Marigolds (the roots) expel a substance that spreads into the soil nearby and kills off nematodes.
Garlic with celery, radish, and parsnips gives off a pungent scent that deters aphids.
Hyssop with Brussel sprouts and cabbage to deter cabbage moth.
Lavender blooms attract many beneficial insects and goes well with chicory.
Lemon Balm dried and powdered sprinkled throughout the garden will deter many pests.
Marjoram planted with spring onion, sweetcorn, pumpkins, courgettes, mizuna greens, aubergines and sweet peppers. Its scent confuses pests.
Mint with cabbage and tomatoes deters pests including cabbage moths, ants and aphids.
Nasturtium planted between plants will help minimize pests by attracting beneficial insects.
Oregano near cauliflower and pak choi will improve flavour and repel cabbage butterflies.
Parsley among tomatoes and asparagus attracts bees as well as hoverflies.
Petunia all over the garden will repel many garden pests.
Pot Marigolds attract beneficial insects like hoverflies and bees to the garden.
Poppies grown near many plants, will attract lacewings which eat aphids.
Rosemary with brassicas deters cabbage moths, bean beetles and carrot flies.
Sage with carrots and cabbage will deter carrot fly and cabbage moth.
Sunflower with sweet corn are believed to increase yield.
Tansy with cauliflower repels flying insects and ants.
Thyme with most vegetables, particulary cabbage,cauliflower, pok choi will strengthen plants and repel aphids and deter cabbage worms.
Tobacco Plant grown in the greenhouse will encourage parasitic wasps which control whitefly larvae.
