Donated tomato seed has been sown and is germinating nicely. Based on last year, we are going with four sorts of marigolds in the main entrance beds. The tallest and most dwarf varieties were sown last week and are germinating at higher than expected rates. I ‘ve now obtained seed for two intermediate heights and I hope to get them planted over the weekend. Assuming the beds don't get any bigger, it will take 16 flats (c.800 plants) to fill those three beds.
We have been offered a dozen newly introduced shrub cultivars and a dozen large ornamental grasses for display in the wedding garden. The shrubs retail in the $30.00 range and the grasses perhaps half that, this is quite a significant donation. The offer came as a direct result of the work done over the past three years by PTG volunteers.
In conversation the donor told me that he had been watching the improvements in the gardens then, right out of the blue, he said: "You know what I’m going to do ........... When do you want them delivered?" It’s that sort of response that makes all the effort worthwhile.
