If you have young trees or shrubs make sure to mulch heavily and cover with burlap to prevent wind burn. You can take a plastic pot and cut it down the side, then cut off the bottom, slip this around the bottom of the tree to act as a collar. This will help to prevent rodents from nibbling on the bark. This also works for vines (clematis and others).
