Photos: Left - Zebrina Pendula, Right - Albiflora 'Albovittata'
This is a fast growing plant exceptional for hanging pots. A genus of 20 to 60 species (depending on classification followed) of perennials, both deciduous and evergreen. Fleshy plants from North to South America. Leaves are somewhat fleshy, alternate leaves and three petalled flowers within leaf or spathe like bracts; flowers have bearded stamens. Tradescantia was named for John Tradescat (1608-1662) gardener to King Charles I.
Light requirements: indirect light , some direct light is beneficial for Zebrina, Setcreasea and Cyanotis. Grow Siderasis in semi shade.
Water: liberally from spring to autumn, sparingly in winter.
Humidity: Mist leaves occasionally-Siderasis regularly. Keep soil moist but not soggy and allow to dry between waterings
Feed monthly, spring to fall Use a general all purpose soil mix
Minimum temps: 13 deg C
Repot infrequently, in springand pinch often to keep plant full.
Propagation: Root cuttings in moist sand or water. Stem cutings in soil or water. Siderasis by division.
These plants are generally pest free.

Some problems:
Bare spindly growth - too little light, too little water or too little fertilizer. All stems become straggly and bare with age. Cut back spindly growth; replace old plants.
Leaves all green - too little light. Variegated types revert to green form in shady conditions.
Stems limp leaves yellow and spotted - underwatering. Water liberally during growing season; allow to dry between waterings.
Leaf tips brown and shrivelled - Air too dry. Check for red spider mites. Remove dead growth. Mist leaves frequently.
