Rain, rain wonderful rain! Having spent the past two weeks planting the last of the dahlias and cannas and the remaining Gladiolas callianthus, this good soaking is just what the garden needs. It’s also an excuse to take a day off.
The beds which had been heavily mulched were maintaining a pretty good moisture level, certainly good enough to plant without much effort, but the beds with a bare surface were getting quite dry and pulling weeds was in some areas quite impractical. This coming week we’ll try to weed and mulch as much as possible to conserve today’s rain.
The first beets and snow peas have been available for volunteers for the past week and there is a reasonable supply of various herbs - parsley, sage, lovage, dill, basil, chives etc. Moeen said also to take some of the chard so that the plants keep growing while he is away.
For the record: Our fifth of this year’s class has exceeded 14 hours.
