There really is something seriously wrong with a system which makes time pass faster and faster with every year but provides less and less energy to keep up. I haven’t got last year’s annual report written yet and now there’s a new set of classes to start teaching on Saturday. It’s no wonder that old people get to be ninety and just run out of breath.

Because this Saturday’s class sets up the scope and philosophy of the series and defines the language for the entire year, it is the most important class not to miss. If a subsequent class is missed it can be picked up next year but if the first class is missed the rest of the course will likely be filled with gaps, frustration and misunderstandings. We will not even be speaking the same language. The first session is also the most demanding and aggravating so, by attending that one, you might decide that the course is not for you and at least you’ll avoid seven more Saturdays of further annoyance.

So far, there are two people from previous year’s classes who have registered to go around again. The deal is that any past student/volunteer can retake any or all of subsequent classes in perpetuity (At no extra charge! Prior notice not actually necessary but appreciated.) It is always encouraging for me to have some familiar faces around and it is very helpful to new students to have some ‘survivors’ to talk to.

Last year, ‘cookie break’ featured pumpkin cookies with pumpkin from the garden. This year someone gave me a recipe for Garlic Sablés and they’re quite yummy. As we grew a whole load of garlic last year the match was made. [Sablés a.k.a. French Butter Cookies or Breton Biscuits]
