Things to do in January

Plan a new garden. Think of winter interests.

Renovate a new garden. Come up with changes and new plant ideas.

Construct a cold frame.

Clean your terra cotta pots before using.

Order seeds and plants early so you won’t be disappointed.

Bring branches of forsythia, pussy willow, euonymus, camellia, witch hazel, purple sand cherry, magnolia or serviceberry for forcing.

Inspect stored bulbs, corms, and tubers. Discard any that have rotted or have pest problems.

Check evergreens for heavy snow and shake off to prevent branches from breaking.

Catch up on some reading. Garden books and magazines.

Order replacement bulbs for spring planting.

Take a look at your deciduous trees while they are bare. If they need to be pruned and are too large for you book an arborist now.

Start constructing vegetable and herb garden lists that you would like to grow. Make notes of planting times.

Remove snow from branches to prevent breakage.

Check stakes and ties on trees and climbers to make sure they are secure but not too tight.

Plant paper white narcissus in a shallow bowl filled with pebbles and water.

Cut your Xmas tree boughs in 6" to 12" lengths and place on your perennial borders for protection.

Start pansy seeds.

Check tree branches and limbs for signs of egg masses.
