Class #4 Chemicals in the Garden. What an interesting class.
Did you know that C Hopk'ns Cafe Mg is an acronym for carbon, hydrogen, Oxygen, Phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen, sulphur, calcium, iron and magnesium. All of these chemicals are essential for plant growth. Many of the chemicals plants use are natural. Examples lightning changes the nitrogen in soil, animal feces delivers fixed nitrates, and bacteria is fixed pure nitrogen. Nitrogen is the 6th most abundant chemical in the earths crust, potassium the 7th and phosphorous the 12th.
Pesticides are any substance used to destroy pest problems. Toxicity is the ability to cause injury.
Some of our students were visibly bored at the beginning of this class, but soon found out that as with all PTG classes things are not always as they appear. We have several products under our kitchen sinks,eg. Javex, drano, endust, easyoff, WD40, that are far more hazardous than what has been pulled from the market for pest control because it is deemed hazardous to our health and the environment.
