Things to do in March

Increase watering of houseplants and fertilize lightly.

Prune ornamental trees and shrubs that bloom on new wood. Cut honeysuckle back to one or two main stems.

Cut thyme and lavender back to ground level.

Start compost pile.

Start tuberous begonias in pots.

Start seeds indoors for annual flowers.

Check for heaving of perennials. Gently push roots back into the ground or cover with compost.

Lift and divide perennials in late March

Remove leaves and winter debris from lawn.

Plant evergreens and conifers

Root hardwood cuttings.

Prune non stone fruit trees, grapes and raspberries. Start all purpose spray regimen.

Start cool season seeds: onions, leeks, parsley, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, eggplant and peppers.

Begin removing mulch from base of roses.

Sow salad greens and Johnny jump ups(Viola tricolor)on a south facing window.

Plant peas unless there is snow of course.

Do a walk about and check for any winter damage in the garden.

Spread a generous helping of well rotted manure around asparagus crowns and rhubard plants.

Check paper for annual garden shows.
