Using mulch in your garden is the best thing to help conserve water, retard weeds, help to reduce erosion, help with frost / freeze in winter and if you use the right mulch will also add needed nutrients to help enrich your soil.One of the most economical mulches of all are provided free of charge from Mother Nature herself, leaves. Organic mulch which comes from living plants decompose over time and must be replenished. Inorganic mulch like stone does not decompose and will last many years. A new inorganic mulch on the market is shredded rubber. This is actually recycled tires. I don't recommend this, as the summer heats up so does the rubber and the smell is horrible. Come on people there tires, if they overheat and catch fire.... I'm just saying!!! Some chemicals that leach from rubber as it decomposes into your garden are heavy metals, such as aluminum, cadmium, chromium, molybdenum, selenium, and zinc. Two other common rubber leachates are 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) and poly­aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs); these chemicals are health hazards for humans and the environment. (Just a thought!!)
