Update from Alan
We’ve had a good couple of weeks for acquisitions. Dick donated a wheelbarrow and a variety of material to the garden last week, and I found a really beat-up wheelbarrow on garbage day and took it to the garden to work-out its last few loads.

The onions grown and donated by Ian Armstrong Landscaping are filling about half of block C. About 900 little sprouts were planted but it will take a few weeks before they are big enough for their presence to be noticed. All the tomatoes we need have been planted and there are lots left-over if anyone wants them. The rain has brought on the potatoes and they are looking surprisingly healthy at the moment. The daily hand removal of adult beetles and eggs, combined with the long cool spring, has been hard on the Colorado beetles and, so far, not a single grub has been found. The first picking of radish came up last week and several volunteers were able to take bunches for their own use.

For the record, Sandra R., Dianne, Lynn and Claire bring to eight the number of this year’s intake to pass the 16 hour quid-pro-quo.

With the nursery garden mostly under control, attention has turned to getting the display beds planted. Last week, Moeen and Chuck used 329 dwarf red dahlias to edge the beds around the main building. Phyllis continues to tend the sixty-foot long perennial beds which bisect the wedding garden. It would be nice to get all the public areas planted before the month is out but that would be a very long shot.

This week I’ll expect to be available morning and afternoon Mon to Fri and at the weekend it’s the usual routine of Saturday and Sunday afternoons only - nominally 2pm - 4 pm. Dianne has suggested that beetle picking is something which can be done in the cool of the evening. So, if anyone wants to try, phone me and we’ll make arrangements for opening and locking-up the nursery.
