When the season has finished and you've put away everything remember to prep your tools for winter storage. On average you should sharpen your secateurs, shovels and spades, and any other implement used after each use. Most of us don't so be sure to sharpen these implements before winter storage and they will be ready for you in the spring.
Clean all soil (stubborn dirt can be removed with a wire brush or steel wool), keep metal parts oiled and rust free and the wooden bits oiled and splinter free. (place your tools, business end, into a bucket with sand and a quart of motor oil)
If you find minor rust on tools, use steel wool or something rough on the spot, and wipe with an oiled cloth, let sit for a minute and wipe clean. Keep your wooden handles splinter free by giving them a light sanding at least once during the season, cover with a light coat of tung or linseed oil. Let dry and wipe off excess.
Sharpen all your tools and store in a dry place for the winter.
Empty and rinse your watering cans. Hang with nozzle pointing down. Keep plastic cans out of the sun.
Garden hoses should be drained and coiled neatly and hang in a dry place.
Wheelbarrows should have all dirt, etc. removed. Cover exposed surfaces with paint or stain. Tighten all nuts and screws. Lubricate bearings and store on end in sheltered place.
